The Secret of Life (MIT Biology 7.012)

Several hundred illustrations for The Secret of Life, the digital textbook for MIT’s on-campus course 7.012 and online course 7.00x on Introductory Biology. The course is taught by Eric Lander, president and founding director of the Broad Institute, and professor of biology.

Total artificial heart implantation

Illustration for the June 2018 AMA (Current Procedural Terminology) CPT Assistant Newsletter. Accompanies an explanation of the new Cardiovascular codes 33927-33929 to report artificial heart system procedures.

Wisdom Wrap

A series of illustrations created for the Wisdom Wrap® product packaging insert.

This hot/cold gel pack therapy product has a unique variety of applications; these illustrations describe the steps to achieve optimum use.

Harris-Galante hip implants

A series of illustrations for The Harris Orthopaedic Laboratory @ The Mass General by William H. Harris, MD.

The figures depict examples of hip implant designs developed by John Charnley, MD, including approaches to: articular surface replacement, femoral head/neck replacement, wear durability, and stabilization/retention.

Additional illustrations show design changes by Dr Harris and his colleague Dr Jorge Galante, including approaches to improving and optimizing: fixation and integration for both cementless and cement femoral head/neck and cup, replaceable cup liners, and individual customization and standardized, interchangeable components.

JAMA Obesity Theme Issue

The cover image for the Jan 16, 2018 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. This issue was dedicated to research and reviews on the current status of obesity management and long-term care.

The image focuses on aspects of diet decision-making and food choices, by ‘expanding’ a few common foods and beverages into their key components and caloric content.

Creating editorial images such as these is a rewarding process of iteration and experimentation, to tackle elements of content, style, and arrangement.
This is our 10th cover for JAMA as a company, and our 31st for them, overall as individual illustrators!

The illustrations depict pertinent anatomy related to current facial augmentation and restorative techniques such as fat grafting and injection used to obtain more natural, stable rejuvenation results.

Bridging Bio-nano Science and Cancer Medicine (detail)

Bridging bio–nano science and cancer nanomedicine

This illustration accompanies an article published in ACS Nano. It features many issues at the interface between “bio-nano” science (research into the properties and processes of nanoscale phenomena in biological and biology-inspired structures) and cancer nanomedicine (research into the application of nanoscale materials and nanotechnology for the prevention and treatment of diseases).

The illustration serves as an overview of the key influential forces in nanomaterial engineering, current oncology research—and, to highlight ways to improve the next-generation of nanomedicines—also draws focus to existing controversies, and emerging concepts and opportunities for tumor targeting and clinical impact.

Convergent science

This illustration accompanies an article published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. It highlights the concept of convergent science—the intersection of [1] cumulative research (creating complex connections and clinical application by building up simple solutions), [2] identifying ideas worth pursuing (research that has greatest potential for substantial clinical benefit), [3] transparent science (open science approaches to enhance reproducibility and reliability), [4] dark data (tapping into and utilizing unreported, ‘wasted’ data), and [5] bio-nano standards (big data approaches to discovering patterns).
