Appendix L, CPT Pro 2019

Appendix L in the 2019 edition of the AMA (Current Procedural Terminology) CPT Professional codebook.

This extensive table and series of illustrations serve as a reference for the interventional radiology code section. Collectively, they display the hierarchy of vascular branching, with major arteries and veins (aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery, or portal vein) as the starting point of catheterization.

A few of the 16 color-coded anatomical illustrations have been selected as examples.

CPT Professional

Images created for the AMA (Current Procedural Terminology) CPT Assistant Newsletter and the CPT Professional code book. Each image or set of images accompanies explanations of new or updated codes for reporting specific techniques and procedures. Topics range from general esophagectomy techniques, to differences in approach to minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery, to placement of a non-tunneling peripherally-inserted central catheter in a pediatric patient.

Overcoming the Blood Brain Barrier

A series of illustration accompanying an in-depth review article published in Advanced Materials, examining the structure and functional aspects of the blood brain barrier (BBB). The article focuses on the role of nanomaterials and nanoparticles as part of evolving noninvasive therapeutic strategies designed to either bypass or cross the BBB. Many strategies of interest have the potential to exploit existing endogenous pathways—natural mechanisms of cellular transport in the central nervous system—and could be combined with novel techniques in localization and targeting.

Google Health Knowledge Panel

Over fifty images created for a Google Health initiative. We joined a team of medical illustrators, physicians, and other medical content experts to make approximately 400 medical and health conditions, aesthetically and informationally approachable. These images accompany the ‘knowledge panel’ that is displayed as part of Google search results for health condition keywords.

We also helped lay the initial groundwork to develop the stylistic appearance, and consulted on narrative development and other supporting conceptual material.
